Crewmember Trainee

POSITION: Crewmember Trainee 

*  Fulltime; Temporary - up to 1 year; No Benefits

*  Ability and willingness to commit to work towards earning High School Diploma and/or obtaining Driver's License as part of the employment requirement. 

         

POSITION SUMMARY:  Under the supervision of the Crew Supervisor, the Crewmember Trainee is a member of a field and/or construction crew and responsible for performing labor on Natural Resources/Forestry and/or Construction related projects including but not limited to trail construction and maintenance, forestry, Natural Resources Management, home & building construction and maintenance, landscaping, utilities, and road maintenance, etc.  Crewmembers are responsible for assisting the supervisor with daily tasks including but not limited to project site and crew safety compliance; daily reporting; tool, equipment and vehicle maintenance and inventory, as assigned.

The duties and responsibilities listed for this position and is not all-inclusive. Each classification may not be assigned all duties listed, nor do the examples cover all duties which may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY REPONSIBILITIES:  None

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide labor for a variety of on Natural Resources/Forestry and/or construction and maintenance related projects.
  • Assure work standards are being met and adheres to all compliance and requirements as instructed by supervisor.
  • Comply with all training and safety requirements.
  • Assist with the maintenance and inventory of supplies, tools, equipment, and field-use vehicles.
  • Help to assure a safe project environment.
  • Assist with field and training reports, data collection and other related documents, as needed.
  • Provide customer service for funding partners, volunteers and public.
  • All other duties as assigned.

JOB POSITION REQUIRES ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGE and EXPERIENCE or DESIRE TO LEARN:

  • Working on crew-based field and/or construction projects.
  • Methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in field and construction projects - troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, and operation of power equipment such as chainsaws, chippers, chop saw, nail gun, etc.; maintenance, repair and operation of hand tools such as Pulaski, McLeod, Rock Bar, shovel, axe, hammer, tape measure, etc. 
  • Basic customer service.
  • Computer software applications – Microsoft WORD, EXCEL.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS – Certification/license or ability to earn certification/license while on the job - may include:

  • Chain Saw; Cross-cut Saw; Chipper, Chop Saw, etc; OSHA 30, First Aid & CPR, etc.

  • High School Diploma or desire to *advance high school diploma while working for BSR.
    • *Continuous advancement towards high school diploma completion is a mandatory requirement for employment as a BSR Crewmember Trainee.
  • 0–6-month work experience including tool and equipment use in Trail Building and Maintenance, Natural Resources Management, Forestry, General Construction, or related field.
  • Ability to work independently and support a team environment.
  • Willing to work non-traditional hours and days to meet the needs of this position including weekends and week-long spikes, on occasion.
  • Ability to effectively communicate - verbal and written.
  • Ability to provide customer service.
  • Entry level writing, math and organization skills and desire to improve skills.
  • Working knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications or desire to learn.
  • Knowledge, sensitivity, experience or special interest in Native American culture and tradition.
  • Valid California Driver’s License and be insurable to drive or ability to obtain DL within agreed upon time frame.
  • Agreement to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and background check prior to employment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to stand for long periods of time; use hands and fingers to handle or feel; and talk or hear. Employee will perform strenuous work tasks - reach, lift, and handle equipment/tools/materials with hands and arms and regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. The employee must have the endurance and ability to access entire job site, including stairs, ladders, or other elevated structures and surfaces and uneven surfaces such as driveways, roofs, paths, trails, and construction sites.  As required, the employee must have the endurance and ability to hike and carry personal and job equipment and supplies for distances up to 10 miles a day on uneven surfaces such as foothill and high-altitude mountainous trails and terrain up to 10,000+ ft. in elevation.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is generally performed in an outdoor setting or construction setting with a moderate to high noise level. Weekend work may be required. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required. Travel including spike’s (camping, backpacking at project site) up to 1 week will be required on occasion.

PREFERENCE IN HIRING:
