POSITION:  Construction Lead


POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Housing/Transportation Superintendent, the Construction Lead will be responsible for the oversight and supervision of the BSR Construction team; Construction Lead will have the responsibility and accountability in performing a full range of journeyman level carpenter duties in the construction, finishing, and repair of buildings, in all phases (finish and rough) of renovation and new construction.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  Supervises 2-5 crewmembers.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Construction Lead job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provides daily supervision of crew on job site.
  • Assures training, support, and mentoring the crew to meet and/or exceed the desired outcomes of the funders, the Tribe and most importantly the BSR community.
  • Participates in the planning and building of homes and other structures for the BSR Community.
  • Performs work on multiple job sites, simultaneously if needed.
  • Ensures that the job site is always kept in a clean, safe, and organized.
  • Performs blueprint reading; assures work is completed to specifications prepared by other construction professionals, architects and building code.
  • Performs “take-offs” from building plans and calculating the construction material.
  • Assures correct selection of lumber by size and strength to suit each job, sourcing construction materials to suit the customer's budget and style.
  • Assists in the preparation of materials estimates, ordering and inventory.
  • Acts as a project liaison with suppliers and other construction professionals, as required.
  • Performs and oversees installation of wooden structures such as floor, wall and roofing frames, rafters, partitions, joists, and stud.
  • Performs and oversees rough and finished carpentry work in the repair and construction of buildings, sheds, roofs, and other items.
  • Performs and oversees installation of fixtures and fittings such as door handles, locks, hinges, and closures. 
  • Performs design and oversees installation of cabinets, shelving, fitted furniture, drywall, windows, appliances, insulation, and other construction related items. 
  • Performs and oversees repairs of locks, doors, windows, blinds, and other items of typical building components. 
  • Performs routine quality control duties and responsibilities regarding the work being performed. 
  • Assures proper use, maintenance and inventory of tools, equipment, supplies, and vehicles.
  • Ensures subcontractor(s) is fully executing and complying with contracted scope of work. 
  • Assures safety, health, and environmental quality standards; identifies, reports and addresses non-compliance issues in a timely manner.
  • Maintains safety training records.
  • Maintains a written log and other documentation, as required, of construction activities on job sites. 
  • Assists with BSR Emergency Operations, when required.
  • Other duties as assigned.


JOB POSITION REQUIRES:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid California Driver’s License and be insurable to drive.
  • A minimum of 5 years combined experience in construction trades related to commercial and residential construction at a Journeyman level. 
  • A minimum of 3 years on-the-job supervisory experience.
  • Understanding and sensitivity to the Native American culture, tradition and BSR community needs.
  • Submit and successfully clear pre-employment drug screen and background check prior to employment.
  • Valid California Driver’s License and be eligible for insurance coverage with BSR.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain company vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to maintain 1st Aid/CPR certification and other position related certificates.
  • Strong, respectful communication, both verbal and written. 
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service - work in a positive, tactful, and confidential manner with staff, participants, partners, and the community.
  • Working knowledge and ability to perform on all Microsoft Office applications. 
  • Good writing and organization skills. 
  • Ability to organize, maintain and submit records and reports in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Exercise good judgement and initiative.
  • Ability to work successfully with a variety of people from different backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently and support a team environment.
  • Ability to develop and facilitate safety trainings sessions.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to be on their feet and in the field of work; use hands and fingers to handle or feel; and talk or hear. The employee occasionally is required to sit; walk; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. The employee must have the endurance and ability to visit entire job site, including stairs or other elevated structures.


WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is generally performed in an outdoor setting with a moderate to high noise level. Evening and/or weekend work may be required. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required. Travel may be required.
